Voltron Season 6 Episode 7
If the universe won’t love Lotor? He’ll destroy it.
Continuing from my review of the last episode, here we have Lotor in full madness mode. He’s not just settling for destroying the paladins or the Galra empire. He wants to destroy all realities, or at the very least enslave them under his will.
Lotor is what happens when you don’t open your heart. When you don’t let yourself feel. You put the blame on others. “It’s not me, it’s them.” You come up with every excuse why no one will love you. I’m sure as a kid Lotor had it rough but that’s no excuse for what he’s done. Again, look at Keith. He had a tough upbrining but he made it out okay.
Lotor had a chance. He saw how the Paladins treated him when they forged an alliance. He could have changed. He could have tried to make an effort. But no, even in the face of Allura’s love he didn’t change. Allura should feel no guilt because she couldn’t change him, nor was it her responsibility.
I’m finding a lot of unintentional but extremely relevant comparisons to the wave of violence that’s spread across America the last few months in Lotor. He’s a man who finds the only way to deal with his internal issues is with external violence. Thankfully Voltron doesn’t give him an inch. There are no excuses; he’s punished for his decisions. He made his bed and now he’s dead in it. No one will weep for Lotor because he didn’t care about anyone but himself in the end. So many chances to turn back and he kept going deeper into the pits of madness.
I applaud Voltron for how it handled his character. It really tricked so many of us into believing he could be fine but all the clues were there that something was amiss. Hats off to AJ Locascio for turning in an award winning performance. What was on the page was already stellar and you just elevated it to new heights.
Honestly the entire cast deserves props. As the team was starting to be drawn into Lotor’s violence I was incredibly disturbed. To hear Tyler Labine raging to destroy Lotor conveyed everything we needed to know about how far gone they all were.
This season was beyond stellar. Everything fell into place. Nearly all the major mysteries were paid off perfectly and those that are left just excite me for what’s coming next.
We’ve still got whatever the hell Haggar’s up to, especially since she’s now the big bad. What’s her big game plan? What will she do now that she’s apparently full Altean again? What about the Galra empire factions? WHAT ABOUT EARTH?!
Earth. Home. After so long they’re going back… but what will they find there? I can’t wait to find out.
Also, the one true Space Dad has returned and now he’s a silver fox. Bless.
