Voltron: Will There Be A Sequel or Spinoff?

Loading

This article contains spoilers for Voltron Legendary Defender season 8.

The ending for season 8 of Voltron seemingly tied up all loose ends. The galaxy was saved and the characters are all moving on with their lives. There was no hook that any great evil was still out there, so it seems like the Voltron Legendary Defender story is at its end.

Or is it? After all, there was that line about the Holt family establishing the next generation of Legendary Defenders along with imagery tied to Vehicle Voltron. Could fans hope to see a sequel or spinoff?

In previous interviews with Den of Geek, showrunners Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery have discussed the possibility of a sequel or spinoff but nothing has ever been confirmed or given serious discussion (as far as we know). When asked about it earlier this year, Dos Santos made it clear the decision is out of their control.

Even if there is a Voltron sequel, it won’t be happening with Dos Santos and Montgomery in the near future. Both of them are working on different animated Spider-Man film projects. Dos Santos is directing the Spider-Verse sequel and Montgomery is in talks to direct a female centered spin-off. That doesn’t mean Voltron can’t have a sequel or spinoff, but it’d be losing its two biggest creative forces.

The shows writers have also moved on, with story editor Tim Hedrick and writer Mitch Iversion now working on the Fast & Furious animated series.

This isn’t to say a Voltron sequel or spin-off couldn’t be done. Both Dos Santos and Montgomery have spoken to us in the past about all the potential routes those could take if they were made. Montgomery would love to pursue stories that aren’t sequels but would give viewers a different side of the series then what we’ve already seen.

“How did the rebels form? How did the Blade of Marmora form? Just exploring the depths of some of the organizations we didn’t get to spend a ton of time with.”

Dos Santos adds, “I want to see Kolivan move from the ranks of an acting Galran officer to a founding member of the Blade of Marmora. (I’m) all in for a Garrison episode. We’ve teed up a ton of possibilities (in the universe.). Now its just people taking the ball and running with it.”

While animated versions of those stories seem to be off the table for now, both producers have expressed interest in novels being made that would fill in those gaps fans want to see.

“There could be entire novels written about what’s going on in the world of Voltron,” muses Dos Santos.

The possibilities of Voltron novels are endless, especially if they’re aimed at the YA audience. While the current books aimed at younger readers are fine, there’s a huge market for stories set in the Voltron world that feature the same level of storytelling featured in the series. Plus fans would be delighted if the novels were told from the perspectives of the Paladins, getting a chance to see inside their heads.

Lion Forge, the current publisher of Voltron comics, could also continue the story if they were allowed. There’s been no word on that as of yet but there have been many franchises that have continued their stories in comic form including Smallville, Star Trek, Buffy, and more.

Even if this is the end of Voltron: Legendary Defender for now, Voltron won’t be gone forever. VLD was the fourth incarnation of Voltron on TV and it most likely won’t be the last.

Sometime in the future, Voltron will be needed once more. It may not be the same characters we came to love in Voltron: Legendary Defender but it will still be the same Voltron we know in love. Whether it’s in a new animated series or live action movie, you can be assured that any version of Voltron will be a defender of the universe.
