Jessica Jones is the Most Popular Marvel Show on Netflix
Netflix rarely decide to dish up any details on the success of their original shows. Sometimes we can come up with our own conclusions when they’re not renewed, or when they seem to end after only a few seasons, but in terms of viewing figures, the streaming service plays its cards so close to its chest that they’re practically internal organs.
It’s fairly surprising, then, to hear Netflix’s vice president of product innovation Todd Yellin chattin’ (not yellin’) about the current popularity of each of their Marvel series.
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are all in various stages of production or pre-production for new seasons right now, but when Netflix newbies subscribe and weigh up how they first want to be introduced to the small screen world of Marvel comics adaptations, the majority of them opt to begin the journey with Jessica Jones.
“When it comes to an individual story, they’ll watch it in order. But when it comes to these related kind of series, they’re very different kinds of stories,” explained Yellin. “They watch them in order of how they’re interested in them and how they learn about them.”
The viewing order after Jessica Jones tends to be Daredevil, then Luke Cage, with Iron Fist as the last choice, but even customers who choose to start with Daredevil “most often” pick the female detective show next.
“These different lead-ins show that there is unlikely alliances to different people’s tastes about the kinds of stuff they’re going to like,” Yellin added. “The human brain is very complex and taste comes out of that. It’s not like you’re into one thing and that’s all you ever watch.”
More details about viewers choosing their first Marvel show were also revealed, with Daredevil the popular choice for fans of Breaking Bad and Dexter, Jessica Jones selected by Master Of None and Orange Is The New Black junkies, Luke Cage a favorite with those who watched Black Mirror and The Walking Dead, and Iron Fist a surprising follow-on for bingers of 13 Reasons Why.
With The Defenders now in the rearview, Netflix are set to release The Punisher next.
