Hailee Steinfeld in Talks to Star in Netflix Film Idol

Hell nos and headphones are paying for the new kid. Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in and produce Idol, a musical drama for Netflix. The feature film will be produced by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves’s 6th & Idaho production company, according to Variety.

Netflix beat out Universal and Paramount for the project. Reeves will not direct the film. He is currently developing The Batman film at Warner Bros. Pictures, and the science fiction series Recursion for Netflix.

The screenplay was written by Matt King. Federal, Republic Records’ film division, already has a deal to release the original soundtrack. Steinfeld, who hit the charts with singles like “Love Myself” and “Starving,” may also be involved in the music.

Steinfeld sang “I wanna be like most girls” in her 2017 single “Most Girls,” but in the upcoming film she wants to be like her boss, a singing icon. The movie is being described as a mix of Devil Wears Prada and All About Eve, probably with a little A Star is Born thrown in. Set in the pop music world, Steinfeld will play the Eve Harrington role of assistant who who tries to steal the limelight of her boss by becoming her.

There is no word yet on who will play the iconic singer.

Steinfeld, who was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Mattie Ross in True Grit (2010), will voice the charater Gwen Stacy in Sony’s upcoming animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She will next be seen in Bumblebee, which comes out in December. Steinfeld was nominated for a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for the role of Nadine Franklin in The Edge of Seventeen (2016). Steinfeld also acted in Ender’s Game (2013), Romeo & Juliet (2013), Begin Again (2013), and 3 Days to Kill (2014). She played Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017).
