Iron Fist Canceled After Two Seasons

Iron Fist has lost his chi. Netflix and Marvel have come to mutual decision to end streaming series Iron Fist after two seasons.

Apparently a much-improved second season was not enough for Marvel and Netflix to order a third season and the story of Danny Rand could end here, depending on what the character’s involvement in future Defenders series might be.

Marvel and Netflix delivered the following joint statement to Deadline

“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

At some point one of the Marvel Netflix shows was going to become the first one to get canceled or negotiate its own end. Iron Fist, as undoubtedly the weakest of its peers, would have been a good bet to be the first to get the Stormbreaker of cancellation. Still, this is unexpected to say the least. Not only was season two of the show much improved but it ended on a pretty massive cliffhanger. Now it’s unclear what’s next for Danny Rand and Colleen Wing.

There is also the fact that Danny Rand as Iron Fist hasn’t just been confined to the series Iron Fist. As part of Netflix’s Marvel crimefighting team, The Defenders, Danny Rand has appeared in the team up series, The Defenders, and Luke Cage Season 2. Netflix and Marvel did not confirm whether Danny Rand will continue to pop up in the other Defenders series though the statement “the immortal Iron Fist will live on” certainly looms large.

It’s also worth pointing out that Marvel is in the process of extricating itself from streaming services like Netflix as it prepares content for the upcoming Disney streaming service. The next entry into Marvel’s Netflix streaming universe, Daredevil Season 3, arrives on October 19.
