Tales Of The City: New Season Lands at Netflix
There hasn’t been a new instalment of Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City on TV since 2001, and Netflix has decided that now is the perfect time to bring it back.
A new 10-episode series will see stars Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal. Barbara Garrick (DeDe Halcyon Day), who featured in the 1994 miniseries, will also return, alongside new addition Ellen Page (Inception, The Umbrella Academy).
Here’s the official synopsis…
Based on the books by Armistead Maupin, this next chapter – Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City – follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.
Lauren Morelli (Orange Is The New Black) will be the writer, showrunner, and executive producer on Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City, with Alan Poul returning to direct.
The first three Tales From The City series, and indeed the best-selling novels they were based on, were pretty groundbreaking at the time, addressing LGBT issues and depicting LGBT relationships that were still majorly absent from cultural reflection.
Filming will get underway later this year, and Netflix is hoping to have the new series ready for release in 2019.
