Lady Dynamite Canceled By Netflix
Muskvision…we mean Netflix has opted not to pick up a third season of Maria Bamford’s excellent comedy Lady Dynamite, effectively canceling the show. The eight-episode season two, which debuted on November 10 of last year will be the show’s final outing.
Lady Dynamite told the highly stylized and exaggerated story of Bamford’s life as a comic suffering with bipolar disorder. The show bounced through various time periods in Bamford’s life and ultimately charted her long journey back to sound mental health. It also somehow found the time for jokes like a talking pug with Werner Herzog’s accent and featured no fewer than three characters named Karen Grisham.
Lady Dynamite was created by comedian Maria Bamford, Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz, and long-time South Park producer Pam Brady. The show was a wild mix of off-the-wall humor based on the creative sensibilities of its three very funny, very creative originators.
The show’s cancellation should be bad news for anyone who likes good things. At the same time, however, the second season was relatively conclusive with Maria finding love and then doing something unusual for her: keeping that love and enjoying it.
If nothing else, Lady Dynamite was an excellent reintroduction of Maria Bamford to the world. Bamford took some time off in the mid-to-late 2000s for her mental healt hand Lady Dynamite ended up being a…well, a dynmaite return.
The comic already has a standup special on Netflix and both Hurwitz and Brady should also be in high demand once again.
