What’s new on Disney+ in September 2020
If you like pop culture, you’re probably a fan of at least one of the many franchises that Disney owns — and Disney+ has nearly all of them. From The Simpsons and Pixar to Marvel and Disney Channel Originals, Disney+ has a lot to offer, and its catalog is only becoming more robust. Disney has plans to add more movies, TV shows, and original productions to the already-impressive list of launch titles throughout the remainder of 2020.
Since launching in November, Disney has been rolling out new additions to the service nearly every week. In the interest of making sure you don’t miss anything, here’s the latest list of new movies and shows coming to Disney+, along with what was recently added to the service. We’ll update the list regularly as additions are announced, and we always indicate must-watch projects in bold.
Note: This list doesn’t include new episodes of ongoing series.
Our top picks for September
Mulan
Until recently, Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan was a sure bet to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. However, the ongoing pandemic shutdown has led Disney to try something new. Mulan will be the first-ever film released on Disney+’s Premier Access tier. For $30, fans will get immediate access to Mulan on September 4 for as long as they subscribe to Disney+.
Don’t expect any singing dragons in this film, though. Director Niki Caro has upped the drama and the action, as Liu Yifei’s Mulan goes to war while disguised as a young man. Mulan defies the cultural taboos of her time, and she charts her own path toward honor. This film also features a stellar supporting cast, including Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li. We suspect that a lot of families are eagerly looking forward to this movie, and it looks like it’s going to be a wild ride.
The Wolverine
It should come as no surprise that the R-rated Logan will never be on Disney+. Thankfully, The Wolverine is the next best thing for fans. For Hugh Jackman’s second solo X-Men movie, the story loosely adapts the first Wolverine comic book by Chris Claremont and artist Frank Miller. While mourning the loss of Jean Grey, Logan is drawn to Japan out of a debt to an old friend. However, Logan soon finds himself on the run from dangerous killers while his healing powers fail him. More alarmingly, Logan is falling hard for Tao Okamoto’s Mariko Yashida, a woman who is engaged to be married. It’s a heart-wrenching tale with impressive action that makes it one of the best X-Men films to date.
