The film, which is being written by Emily Gordon (The Big Sick), is based on the four-part comic book series of the same name by Scott Lobdell and follows Edgar and Mallory Bulson, a married couple who have decided to throw in the towel. However, their lives are flipped upside down when a mysterious meteor bathes the couple in extraterrestrial energies, giving them super-powers that only work when they’re together.
“Dwayne and Emily have a chemistry together that is unmatched in our business right now. They are the perfect duo to bring Emily V. Gordon’s electric superhero story to life, and take the world of Ball and Chain to new heights,” Scott Stuber, Head of Netflix Film, said in a statement.
Johnson is attached to produce the film through his banner Seven Bucks with Dany and Hiram Garcia, while Kevin Misher, who worked with Johnson and Seven Bucks for Fighting With My Family, is also set to produce with Gordon and Blunt.

“One of our main initiatives at Seven Bucks is to continue to find the best platforms to tell stories that entertain and inspire on a global scale,” Johnson said in a statement. “Netflix is the perfect partner to deliver this epic superhero/romantic comedy experience alongside us, and we’re excited to be back in business with the Netflix team. I’m also excited to not only reunite with dear friend Emily Blunt in front of the camera, but to also collaborate as producing partners as we bring Emily V. Gordon’s script to life.”
Blunt and Johnson’s first pairing was originally set to debut this year on July 24 in the form of Disney’s adaptation of its theme park ride Jungle Cruise, but given the current global pandemic it has been delayed back to July 2021. Jungle Cruise marked the second film for Blunt to be pushed from its original 2020 release, with A Quiet Place Part II being pushed from its original March release to its current September 4 release. The pandemic also hit Johnson by delaying production on his upcoming actioner at Netflix Red Notice, in which he stars alongside Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984) and Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy).
