Furiosa prequel confirmed, plus George Miller’s next set at MGM
The five-year anniversary of George Miller’s Oscar-winning blockbuster smash Mad Max: Fury Road is here and while word has been swirling of Miller following it up with a film focused on Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa, it appears he’s finally actively developing the spin-off as a prequel. In an extensive oral history on the making of Mad Max: Fury Road at The New York Times, Miller opened up about his plans for the future of the post-apocalyptic franchise that began in 1979, including revealing he is now working on the long-discussed movie focused on Furiosa. Development on the project has been in the works since 2015, with word recently coming in March that Miller was meeting with younger actresses to take on the role for a prequel setting, namely Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants).
He’s confirmed now that Theron will in fact not reprise her role for the spin-off, but notes he did consider bringing her back and using the digital de-aging technology that has become a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp before ultimately choosing to re-cast the role.
The 75-year-old writer/director is currently waiting to return to wrap filming on his next project Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton (The French Dispatch) and Idris Elba (Hobbs & Shaw), which just had its domestic distribution rights acquired by MGM, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Once Miller is able to return and finish shooting that project, which was shut down due to the global health pandemic, he is looking to make the Furiosa movie next.
Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.
