Lost in Space Netflix Reboot Trailer, Release Date, Cast and Story Details

Lost in Space will soon be found… on Netflix. The streaming service is rebooting the classic science fiction favorite as a 10-episode series.

The classic genre-shaping 1965-1968 series, created by the prolific Irwin Allen, was produced during the most exciting and optimistic period of the space program, telling the story of the Robinson family, whose journey to discovery was thrown off course by the malicious meddling of stowaway Dr. Smith. Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot will be skippered by Toby Stephens, who currently navigates the fleet of pirate vessels on the Starz series Black Sails as Captain Flint.

Lost in Space Netflix Release Date

The Netflix remake of Irwin Allen’s 1965 cult series Lost in Space is slated for an April 13th release.

Parker Posey’s portrayal of Dr. Smith, controversial for its gender swap from the original show in some circles, is not to be missed:

Netflix has also released a new Lost in Space featurette.

The focus here is on the idea that, amongst the (visually stunning) bells and whistles of prospective visits to exotic planets and encounters with new forms of life, the series, at its core, is about the Robinson family, whose apparent personal fractures will be repaired through the bonding experienced during this interstellar adventure.

Here’s the official trailer for the new series:

Lost in Space Netflix Cast and Crew

The Lost in Space reboot is being produced by Legendary Television. The series will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who wrote the movies Dracula Untold and Last Witch Hunter. Zack Estrin from Prison Break will be the showrunner. Several episodes will be directed by Neil Marshall, from the production house Applebox, which is producing alongside Synthesis Entertainment’s Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni. Marshal helmed The DescentDoomsday, and episodes of Game of Thrones and Hannibal.

Toby Stephens, who is starring on the final season of Black Sails, will play astrophysicist John Robinson, the commander of the interstellar mission and the head of the family Robinson.

When Maureen Robinson was a little girl, she had a very special friend name Mr. Noodles who lived in her teddy bear. Now she’s all grown up and lives in a tin can hurling through the stars with her family. They are on a mission, not to explore strange new worlds, but to settle one. Molly Parker (House of Cards) will play Maureen Robinson, the mom on Netflix’s upcoming 10-episode Lost In Space series remake.

Maureen Robinson was played by June Lockhart in the Irwin Allen series. The character is being described as a “fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer.”

Maxwell Jenkins will play Will, the youngest Robinson child, played by Billy Mumy in the original series. Judy Robinson, John and Maureen’s oldest child, will be played by Falling Skies actress Taylor Russell. Judy was played by Marta Kristen in the 1960s. Judy Robinson was played by Heather Graham in the 1998 Lost in Space feature film.Russell played Lark Voorhies in Lifetime network’s Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story and appeared in the series Strange Empire (2014). Russel also appeared in the film Dead of Night.

Never fear, Smith is here. Parker Posey will be playing the doctor, not space explorer, Dr. Smith on the Lost In Space remake series that is coming to Netflix in 2018. Dr. Smith is the stowaway who changes the weight of the vessel and the trajectory of the Robinson family cruise.Posey is known for her roles in such films as Josie and The Pussycats, Christopher Guest’s Mascot and Woody Allen’s Café Society.

Ignacio Serricchio (Bones) will play a different kind of Don West. Originally played by Mark Goddard as the loyal and down-to-earth co-pilot, he is being reimagined as a rough and tumble flyboy who has a side gig as a smuggler specializing in luxury goods.

Raza Jaffrey (Homeland, Code Black, Smash) will play Victor. “Well groomed, educated and officious, with a sense of entitlement, Victor has been a career builder and politician from a young age,” according to the official synopsis. “There is arrogance and impatience about him. All this masks the underlying fear that he’ll one day be found out — that he isn’t quite good enough.”

Lost in Space History

For those who only remember when Gary Oldman lost his compass in the 1998 reboot movie, the original 1965 TV series by Irwin Allen ran for three seasons. Loosely based on the Swiss Family Robinson, the series followed the Robinson family as they hurtled through the icy darkness of space after their unwitting and unwilling stowaway Dr. Zachary Smith, played by Jonathan Harris, sabotaged their navigation system.

The original CBS series was set in 1997. The Robinsons’ spaceship was called the Jupiter 2.  But the breakout star of Lost in Space originated in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s classic science fiction film Forbidden Planet, the robot is a cousin to Robby the Robot, the clinking, clanking, caliginous godfather of C3PO and R2D2, who was voiced by Dick Tufeld. As any Rocky Horror Picture Show fan knows, Anne Francis starred in Forbidden Planet

“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience,” Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland said in a statement. “The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

The 1998 feature reboot starred William Hurt, Gary Oldman, Matt LeBlanc, Heather Graham and Mimi Rogers.

The original episodes were recently released on Blu-ray as Lost In Space: The Complete Series in honor of its 50th anniversary.
