Tony Danza, who is best known as the mediocre middle-weight fighter on the classic TV series Taxi, is trading in his hacker’s license for a traded-in badge on the upcoming Netflix comedy drama series The Good Cop, according to TV Line. The pilot will be directed by Randy Zisk. Netflix ordered ten one-hour episodes of the series.
The Good Cop will be run by executive producer Andy Breckman, who created Monk. It is also being executive produced by Zisk and Howard Klein and Israeli production company YES.
“We’re excited to bring viewers the return of Tony Danza, one of television’s most beloved icons,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in a statement. “The Good Cop is a funny, charming procedural series that we think our members will love.”
Here is everything else we know about this new sitcom.
The Good Cop Trailer
Here’s a first look at Tony Danza in The Good Cop.
The Good Cop Cast
Danza will play a disgraced former NYPD cop named Tony Sr., whose son Tony Jr. is an honest cop. The father never followed the rules, the kid is a stickler for them. The father tries to school the kid on everything from handling suspects who resist arrest, to women who resist dates.
Danza followed up his supporting role as Tony Banta, which he played from 1978-1983, on the ensemble series with a starring role on the sitcom Who’s the Boss, which ran from 1984-1992. Banta may have lost his boxing license because he was knocked out too many times, but Danza never went down for the count. He was sidelined by an injury, but went back into acting after an almost miraculous recovery driven by physical therapy. Danza will also be featured on the upcoming series about Johnny Carson called There’s Johnny! on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Seeso.
Interestingly, Tony Jr. will be played by none other than Josh Groban. Groban is primarily known as a musician but has had some small roles in TV shows like The Office and films like Fun Size. This will be his most prominent acting performance yet though as he’s being billed as a co-lead on the show.
Other familiar TV faces, Isaiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire), and Monica Barbaro (Lethal Weapon) will round out the main cast.
