The new season of Jessica Jones has been a hit with critics. We praised the show for its willingness to step out of the shadow of its excellent first season, and how it shows genuine growth for Jessica, Trish Walker, Malcolm, Jeri Hogarth, and others. But the big question is: will Jessica Jones Season 3 happen?
Yes it will. This is good to know because Jessica Jones Season 3 was never a sure thing, as nothing should be taken for granted with any Netflix show, let alone a Marvel one. For example, Krysten Ritter recently said that it doesn’t look like The Defenders Season 2 will happen, for example.
However, it looks like Jessica Jones will be following The Punisher‘s lead in short turnarounds, as star Krysten Ritter explained at Comicpalooza recently (via comicbook). Asked if she was getting ready for the third season already, the actress seemed excited to confirm for gathered fans that she is.
“I am. Spoiler alert! I start very soon. I’m training, boxing, all of that. Pumping iron.”
She wasn’t joking about that intense physical prep, either.
“You have to get yourself physically prepared to do the stunts, but also our schedule’s crazy. We work long hours, sometimes we work overnight. I found that when I start off in really good shape, I feel better and I can keep up with the schedule.”
And although season 2 was a hit with critics, some viewers were left a bit cold by the slow burn storytelling, which spent a lot of time establishing Jessica’s newfound relationship with a volatile mother she had thought was long dead. Mulling Jessica’s journey so far, Ritter had this to add:
“What I love so much about season one or season two were how deeply personal both storylines were, but different. So I got to explore different things within her and in my performance, show new colors. I think season one and two, we really looked back at Jessica’s past. We looked at what made her as hardcore she is and how isolated [she is], and she’s learned a lot — I think especially in season two she’s learned a lot about herself. She has a lot to live up to, and I’m curious to see what she does next.”
So are we.
That brings us to the next big question…
Jessica Jones Season 3 Release Date
When will we see Jessica Jones Season 3? We’re still going to have to wait a while. Krysten Ritter shot The Defenders and the second season of JJ back to back, and she could probably use a few months off from the character. We’ll see second seasons of The Punisher, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, as well as the third season of Daredevil before we get Jessica back.
We’ll conservatively estimate Jessica Jones Season 3 to arrive in November 2019, which would give Marvel and Netflix time to clear the decks of all those other shows. We’ll update this as soon as there’s any kind of official confirmation.
