Everything sucks for Everything Sucks!

Netflix has canceled the ’90s-set coming-of-age dramedy after only one season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Everything Sucks! was created by Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan. It tells the story of a several high schoolers from different social castes in Boring, Oregon. Freshman Luke O’Neil (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) is in A/V Club with his friends McQuaid (Rio Mangini) and Tyler (Quinn Liebling). Luke is in love with principal’s daughter Kate Messner (Peyton Kennedy), who may be a lesbian. Yes, the show plays Weezer’s ode to unrequited love “Pink Triangle” and no, you will never convince me that the show didn’t write the entire first season around that song.

“We’re super proud of the show we made — and very proud that it found an audience of very passionate fans, for many of whom it became an important personal touchstone: either reflecting their current life, or an echo of their own teenage years,” executive producer Jeff Pinker said. “We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity, but are very disheartened we won’t be continuing to tell these stories.”

Everything Sucks! received mixed-to-positive reviews. We weren’t necessarily fans but the show’s first and only season does have a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, since Netflix doesn’t reveal any viewership data it is unknown how Netflix users responded to it, save for a distinct lack of buzz.

Netflix is infamously hesitant to cancel original content. Everything Sucks! is now only the fourth original Netflix series to receive only one season, joining Girlboss, Gypsy, and The Get Down.
