Iron Fist Season 2: Everything We Know

Loading

This article contains a major spoiler for the first season of Iron Fist. You might not want to read this unless you’ve finished all 13 episodes.

It’s official! Iron Fist Season 2 was confirmed during The Defenders panel at SDCC back in July.

Alice Eve has joined the cast of Iron Fist for Season 2. The Star Trek Into Darkness is playing “an undisclosed role.”

“We are very excited to have an actress of Alice’s stature join the cast of Marvel’s Iron Fist,” said Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel TV, via Marvel. “Her exceptional talent brings an intrigue and danger to her character unlike anyone else.”

In other news: Iron Fist season 2 will have a new showrunner. Raven Metzner (Sleepy Hollow) will take over from Scott Buck.

“Raven’s love of all things Iron Fist and his extensive knowledge of martial arts films made him the perfect choice to continue telling the adventures of Danny Rand and Colleen Wing,” Jeph Loeb said in a statement.

The move isn’t all that surprising considering the fact that the first season of Iron Fist was somewhat poorly received. It’ll be up to Metzner to right the ship.

Finn Jones recently told us that Danny Rand’s origin story from the first season of Iron Fist was incomplete, and that it would take until the conclusion of The Defenders for him to fully embrace his superheroic destiny.

He also told us that he hopes that Danny eventually gets a costume, including the “classic yellow mask,” but he knows that these Marvel Netflix shows prefer to let things happen organically.

The thing with all of these shows is not that we’re shy to bring the costumes,” Jones said. “It’s that we want them to feel authentic when it does happen. Danny’s on this journey to understanding what his responsibility is. And throughout all of [Iron Fist] season 1, he was in no state of mind to put a suit on. That would’ve been ridiculous because he was not fully accomplished as the Iron Fist yet and he certainly didn’t have the right or the responsibility to be putting on a superhero costume. He needs to work his shit out. And certainly by the end of The Defenders, it will feel right.”

Iron Fist Season 2 Release Date

This one’s still a mystery. Since 2018 is already looking pretty full, with Luke Cage Season 2, Jessica Jones Season 2, and probably Daredevil Season 3, it’s very likely that we won’t see Iron Fist Season 2 until 2019. We’ll update this as soon as there’s official confirmation.

However, Finn Jones seems to have narrowed down the timeframe for Iron Fist Season 2. In an interview with Inverse discussing the recently-released team-up The Defenders, Jones reveals when he’ll be back in training, honing his chi for more kung fu action, stating (in an interview published August 22):

“Moving into Season 2 of Iron Fist, I’m actually starting my training next week.”

As for the Iron Fist Season 2 production itself, Jones auspiciously muses about the time he’ll have to prepare, which was not available to him when he tackled Iron Fist Season 1, immediately transitioning to The Defenders. This means that the fight scenes in Season 2 should be an improvement over the heavily-criticized Season 1 sequences. As he reveals:

“We’re at least four or five months away from shooting, so this time around, I’m being given a lot more preparation leading up to Season 2, which I think is really gonna have a huge improvement on the quality of the fight scenes in Season 2 of Iron Fist.”

Tacit concession aside regarding the quality of Iron Fist Season 1’s fight scenes, Jones’s words, revealing that his training starts in late August, also implies that Iron Fist Season 2 could commence production either in December 2017 or January 2018. Thus, Iron Fist Season 2 could arrive as early as late-2018. Yet, given the aforementioned packed schedule of Netflix Marvel shows, early 2019 still seems a bit more realistic.
