Stranger Things Sets Twitter Records

Things are all a-twitter in the upside down. Nobody normal ever accomplished anything meaningful in this world, but freaks get people talking. The cult 80s retro series Stranger Things made a post-modern splash when it returned for season 2 on Netflix on October 27. Talk about the series broke records on Twitter. We would lie about that. Friends don’t lie.

According to the social network, more than 3.7 million tweets about Stranger Things were shared during its opening weekend, making it the most-tweeted-about streaming show in 2017. Netflix dropped the entire season on a binge-hungry public at 3 a.m. Eastern time. The high point for the tweets came between 11 a.m. and Noon that Friday, just about the time it would have taken for most people to get through the episodes.

According to Forbes, Netflix’s series House of Cards got 52,458 Twitter mentions in the first 48 hours of its debut. Orange Is the New Black was tweeted about 105,753 times.

Stranger Things focuses on a young teenage girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who has been telepathically enhanced  into some kind of secret weapon. During the first season she befriended a group of kids, Will (Noah Schnapp), Steve (Joe Keery), Hopper (David Harbour), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), who take take their roleplaying very seriously. Season 2 tests that loyalty. The series also stars Winona Ryder, who was fifteen when she made her film debut in Lucas in 1986, and became a teen icon by the time she played Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988).

Stranger Things was one of Netflix’s most-watched shows of 2016, averaging over 14 million viewers in its first month. It  is also one of its best-reviewed series. The show was created by showrunners the Duffer brothers.
